Our clients asked us to design an extension to an existing town house unit in Surrey Hills to create a larger working space for the parents and additional room for their young child. The existing kitchen and bathrooms had been previously renovated.
To provide the second story addition we had severe setback restrictions imposed by the local government planners, hence our decision to curve the roof, not only does it provide the additional floor space but it creates an exciting architectural element.
We also opened up the north facade with new double glazed cedar windows with sliding doors opening up onto a new deck. The north windows have external pull down blinds for exclusion of summer heat. The second story is constructed on a suspended concrete slab to provide additional thermal mass for the home. A Greenheat hydronic heating system was installed , which is linked to the new solar hot water service to provide additional winter heating.
Energy efficient lighting was provided to all rooms and walls are painted with Wattyl ID Environmental paint. The timber floor is sealed with Tung Oil .
Velux roof windows were punched into the curved roof to provide maximum solar gain for the extension, two private upper level decks were also created with timber privacy screens to ensure overlooking was not an issue for neighbours.
A Garden Saver greywater was also installed to provide water for toilet flushing and gardening.
