The Hawthorn home is a two bedroom, single storey home in Hawthorn for a single woman and her two dogs.
From a passive solar point of view; this home was particularly challenging in that the front yard was also the north face of the building. Ideally the living areas will be orientated north to maximize the solar gain and natural light in these spaces. The house was designed with two living zones – each with their own large north-glazed living spaces. The landscaped garden folds around these spaces and draws the landscaped park to the south through the living spaces, creating an immediate connection with the outdoors and opportunity for several outdoor living options to suit all weather and seasons. A dramatic hallway with a tall curved east facing wall is the connecting element between the 2 zones and allows morning light into the kitchen and bedrooms through strategically placed highlight windows. The curved wall defines space and unifies the living elements as one moves through the home.
The home achieves better than 7-star energy efficiency, it collects rainwater in an underground tank, it recycles its grey water onto the garden, it generates power via grid-interactive photovoltaic panels and it heats water using a close-coupled solar hot water system. It is highly insulated and provides excellent passive cooling through cross-flow ventilation. It is built using sustainable and recycled materials. Through form and through function; 80 Roseberry minimises its impact on the earth while providing bright, comfortable space for living.
